My first job is to write a compelling story with interesting characters and a moving, engaging plot. But then what? Well, I need to appeal to the reader. I need a cover with an image that draws attention so you’ll turn it over and read the back description which hopefully leads you to reading the novel.

This is about my journey redesigning the covers of the Broken Water Series. I have a background in interior design and enjoy photography. However, I hired a cover artist to come up with the designs for the first three books in the series. The only direction I gave the designer was that I’d like images of blond women underwater. I wanted the images to evoke mystery and adventure with some romance. After searching through thousands of online images, I settled for a brunette underwater. Once it was released for sale, I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that my cover just wasn’t right. It bugged me!

I asked fellow authors, friends and strangers what their thoughts were on the cover. I got remarks like “the title is hard to read” or “it looks like a ghost story”. I felt compelled to go back to the

drawing board. So I’ve taken on the task of the redesigned covers for my series. I subscribed to an online image site to purchase stock photos. I read everything I could on how to put a cover together using the tools I had—mainly Microsoft Word. It took a couple of months, but I was able to redesign my covers. Where there is a will, there is a way—I always say.

Hopefully this cover is more appealing. I’d love to hear what you think.
